VLM Automatic Handling Systems
Handling large rolls of product packaging can be difficult and hazardous due to their size and weight. They also take up a lot of room. This was the issue at one product packaging manufacturer, who quickly ran out of space in their warehouse due to their growing business. The manufacturer also wanted to improve ergonomics and safety to prevent injury to employees and damage to products. To solve their space and safety issues, the manufacturer installed a vertical lift module (VLM) automatic handling machine for heavy product packaging rolls to increase worker safety and ergonomics while creating more space in their warehouse without any expansions or building modifications. Increase Worker Safety & Ergonomics
Due to their growing business, the product packaging manufacturer was quickly running out of usable space in their 5,280 sq ft warehouse. Before the VLM automatic handling system was installed, parts were stored on standard pallet racks. To retrieve items, workers would have to navigate a stacker truck through the tight aisles and often had to reach up high or stretch to reach the back of the rack. This was a time-consuming and difficult process that increased the risk of injury and product damage. (See videos )
The pallet rack system occupied 600 square feet of floor space. By contrast, two VLMs now store this inventory in 126 square feet of floor space to provide a 79% increase in floor space. Recovering the 474 square feet of floor space allowed them to reorganize their manufacturing flow to maximize efficiencies.
Additionally, all product packaging rolls are now delivered to the operator at an ergonomic, waist-high level. The part only needs to be lifted once from the VLM to the transfer cart, reducing the risk of injury or damage. The VLMs have also cleared the aisles of clutter to save space and further protect employees. Under the previous system, employees would need to look up the part location and search through the pallet rack system for the needed item. Now, the employee only needs to look up the part location and retrieve it from the correct VLM, where they enter the location number and the part is delivered directly to them. Each tray within the VLM is fitted with dividers with clearly labeled cell locations. Click here to learn more about automatic handling systems.
