Industrial Pallet Racks: The Backbone of Warehouse Storage

Industrial pallet racks form the foundation of modern warehouse storage layouts. With customizable upright frames and beam levels, these racks adapt to inventory needs across industries.

Use this warehouse pallet shelving to organize pallets for fast putaway and retrieval while maintaining clear forklift aisles and safe load distribution across the system.

Benefits include:

  • Compatible with forklift and pallet jack access
  • Load-rated for thousands of pounds per level
  • Modular uprights and beams for scalable layouts
  • Wire decking, rack guards, and pallet stops available
  • Code compliant load signs and safety accessories available

Teardrop Pallet Racks

Teardrop pallet storage racking is a type of selective rack that uses a unique teardrop-shaped hole design for its vertical beams. The teardrop holes allow for easy and quick assembly and adjustment of the beams without bolts or other hardware.

This design feature makes the teardrop rack a cost-effective and efficient storage solution.

  • Quick and easy assembly
  • Easy to adjust vertical space openings

Compact Pallet Racks

Compact Pallet Racks

Compact pallet storage racks are mobile pallet storage systems that mount on heavy-duty motorized carriages. The rolling pallet racks slide back and forth on floor tracks, eliminating static access aisles to create a high-density storage system.

Thanks to the system’s design, compact racking can double your warehouse storage capacity in the same footprint as selective racks, reducing your storage space requirements by up to 60%. Compact pallet storage racks are easy to operate; open your desired access aisle at the push of a button. Remote control forklift access is also available.

  • Significant space savings
  • Customizable design

Drive-In Pallet Racks

Drive-in pallet storage racks are another system designed for high-density pallet storage. In place of designated access aisles, these racking systems allow forklifts to drive directly into the rack for loading and unloading. The racks consist of storage lanes with heavy-duty rails to support the pallets.

As forklifts load and unload pallets from the same end of the rack, drive-in racks facilitate a last-in, first-out (LIFO) inventory rotation. This makes them a better solution for non-perishable goods or facilities with a high inventory turnover. While drive-in racks provide excellent storage density, they offer limited selectivity and are less efficient than other pallet storage racking systems.

  • High storage density
  • LIFO stock rotation
  • Cost-effective
Drive-In Pallet Racks
Drive-Through Pallet Racks

Drive-Through Pallet Racks

Drive-through pallet racks are designed like drive-in racks, except fork trucks can enter both ends of the rack. This design facilitates first-in, first-out (FIFO) inventory rotation, as forklifts can load pallets from one end of the storage lanes and retrieve them from the other end.

This makes them a good solution for perishable products. Like drive-in racks, drive-through racks have a high storage density but reduced efficiency due to the time required to store and retrieve pallets.

  • High storage density
  • FIFO stock rotation
  • Cost-effective

Push-Back Pallet Racks

Push-back pallet storage racks are ideal for high-density storage of multiple SKUs and allow for last-in, first-out (LIFO) access to inventory. There are two types of push-back rack systems. The most common type uses a series of nested carts pushed back along inclined rails, sliding back to make room for new pallets and sliding forward when a pallet is unloaded.

The other push-back rack system features horizontal spring-loaded rails that expand and contract to keep pallets accessible at the front of the rack. Like drive-in racking, push-back racks have a high storage density with limited selectivity. However, push-back racking is more efficient than drive-in and drive-through racking since all pallets are loaded and unloaded at the front of the rack. This also minimizes the risk of damage to the racks or stored pallets.

  • High storage density
  • LIFO stock rotation
  • Efficient access to stored pallets

Gravity Flow Racks

Gravity Flow Racks

Gravity flow racks, also called pallet flow racks, are gravity-fed racks that use sloping roller shelves to move pallets from the loading to the unloading end. They are ideal for high-volume, low-SKU storage and warehouses that require first-in, first-out (FIFO) inventory control.

With only two access aisles (at the front and back of the rack), gravity flow racks offer up to triple the storage capacity of selective racks. The system provides effortless FIFO product rotation, with pallets sliding automatically to the retrieval end of the rack for easy access. The dedicated loading and unloading aisles also improve the efficiency of a facility’s workflow.

  • High storage density
  • FIFO stock rotation
  • Superior efficiency

Cantilever Racks

Cantilever racks store long, bulky items such as lumber, pipes, and sheet metal. They feature arms that extend outward from a vertical column and can be adjusted to accommodate varying inventory sizes.

Cantilever racks can also be converted into a compact racking system for maximum space efficiency, with movable access aisles up to 18 feet wide for safe forklift access and handling of long stock.

  • Versatile design
  • Optimal storage and accessibility for long stock
  • Wide variety of storage arms

Adjustable Pallet Storage Racks

Adjustable Pallet Storage Racks

Adjustable pallet racking systems feature forkliftable beams that allow you to reconfigure your shelving on demand. Ideal for facilities with frequently changing storage needs, adjustable racks offer variable configurations to eliminate the wasted air space common in fixed-height rack systems.

Adjustable racks have beam levels that are sectioned into pallet-sized adjustable shelves with forklift entry slots. Using a standard forklift, you can move the beams up or down in 6” intervals to fit your storage requirements. The storage racking system features durable steel shelving beams that are removable by design. Adjustable racks are available as stationary or mobile storage systems.

Fast-paced storage for high-volume SKUs.

Distribution hubs need industrial pallet racks that handle constant activity, varied SKUs, and rapid turns. These warehouse pallet shelving layouts streamline inbound, staging, and shipping while improving visibility to fast movers across the pallet racking footprint.

Pair selective industrial pallet racking for case pick and replenishment with pallet flow lanes for FIFO where velocity is critical. This mix reduces dwell time, supports accurate slotting, and keeps warehouse storage moving at peak efficiency.

  • Selective pallet racking for fast access to SKUs
  • Pallet flow racks enable FIFO inventory rotation
  • Optimized aisles and bay spacing for warehouse storage

Frequently Asked Questions

Industrial pallet racking is a structural warehouse system for storing palletized materials safely and efficiently. It allows forklifts to load and retrieve goods from multiple vertical levels.
