High-bay mobile off-campus library bookshelves

high bay mobile off campus library bookshelvesIncreased demands for modern amenities and technology have completely shifted the structure of libraries, especially those on university campuses. That is to say, an increased number of institutions are making whatever provisions are necessary to create student learning space. The approach taken by one university involved the use of high-bay mobile off-campus library bookshelves. It was with their help that the those involved managed to be successful in their efforts to encourage instructional innovation while also making the best use of space and staff time. The concept of high-bay mobile shelves and how it allows for better use of space by maximizing capacity in a footprint of size is explained in this news report.

High-bay mobile off-campus library bookshelves make better use of space

How this is all possible is simply understood by explaining the design and function of the high-bay mobile off-campus library bookshelves. Firstly, it is located in a facility completely separate from the underutilized area used to create student learning space. The library’s efforts to make better use of space are already essentially met by considering the space provided in the underutilized area. However, if you also look at the design of the high-bay mobile off-campus library bookshelves, that concept is built upon even further.

The high-bay mobile off-campus library bookshelves are fit to moving carriages, which compact into a footprint of reduced size to provide better space usage. Its operation is controlled by an easy-to-use push button. Individual shelving units can also stand as high as 45 feet. It is the combination of its compact design coupled with the height reachability of its shelf units which allows the system to optimize storage space from every angle. An aisle-lift is used to facilitate access and retrieval of printed materials stored several feet in the air.

High-bay mobile bookshelves leaves library with capacity to create learning space

create student learning spaceWith it accommodating a sizeable number of engineering book holdings from the library, the institution was left with the capacity needed to create student learning space. At the time, two of these centers had already been finished and were fully operational. Both were part of a program, which aims to create student-centered environments, rather than the more traditional instructor-centered lecture halls in support of active learning and innovative instruction. Each are outfitted with everything needed to challenge students to collaborate and take an increasingly active role in participating during class. This includes decentralized seating arrangements, individual laptops, interactive digital whiteboards and shared large-screen monitors.

The new center consists of three classrooms of varying size in addition to a multi-use room and an instructor workroom. The one considered to be the largest includes a highly decentralized seating system consisting of “pods” with half-a-dozen seats each. Each pod is equipped with laptops and a shared large-screen monitor. Instructors are allowed to use smartboards and projectors as well as fixed and mobile whiteboards.

Flexibility was greatly emphasized during the design process. This was to ensure that the spaces not only presented a variety of options to instructors during the day, but could just as easily serve as study areas and collaborative work spaces at any given time. The end result is a space which effectively meets users needs by facilitating the creation, use, and exchange of information between a steady stream of traffic and allows staff to shift their attention to areas of greater priority while still ensuring the institution’s dedication to retaining printed materials.
