When protecting and managing your evidence, you want to ensure that evidence is appropriately handled from the crime scene to the evidence room. The keyless digital evidence lockers temporarily provide a secure and efficient way to store processed evidence from the officer. Read on to learn more.

Two Kinds of Keyless Digital Evidence Lockers

The keyless digital evidence lockers come in stand-alone and pass-thru wall versions for storing temporary evidence. Both lockers accomplish the same goal; the difference is that the stand-alone locker has doors on one side, and the pass-thru wall version has doors and keypads on both sides of the locker. The pass-thru wall lockers are installed in the wall between the processing area and the property evidence room. Click to see more property and evidence storage solutions.

How Digital Evidence Lockers Work

Computerized evidence lockersWith both lockers, the officer takes the confiscated crime scene evidence and accesses a locker compartment using a digital keypad or the officer’s ID badge. Lights will immediately display on all of the unused locker compartments. The office selects and deposits the crime scene evidence into the appropriate locker and closes the door. The locker’s computer software records when evidence is deposited, who deposited it, and which compartment the evidence is in. The software will also notify the evidence technician that evidence has been deposited for pickup.

The evidence technician will then access the compartment using the digital keypad or their ID badge, retrieve the evidence and take it to the property and evidence room for logging and storing.

If the police station uses a pass-thru locker, then the evidence technician will access the locker from the evidence room using the digital keypad or their ID badge.

The evidence technician can also use the locker to pass-back evidence to the police officer. To do this, the evidence technician deposits the evidence into a locker compartment which notifies the officer to pick up the evidence. The pass-back locker mode is used when the officer takes evidence to court or a crime scene technician must check the evidence for evaluation or analysis.

Overnight Evidence Hold

The digital evidence locker can also be used to hold evidence overnight. The overnight feature allows the officer to deposit confiscated evidence in a safe locker compartment instead of the trunk of their police car or a desk drawer. For example, if an officer retrieves evidence to present in court, but the court is running behind and never gets to their case, the officer can deposit the evidence into a locker compartment overnight.

Evidence Locker Drop Slots

Instructing officers to use drop slots instead of evidence locker compartments allows the lockers to be used more efficiently. Visit our online store to see our public safety storage products.

Digital Evidence Locker Construction

The digital evidence lockers are made of heavy-duty steel for durability and security and powder-coated for corrosion resistance. The locker compartment doors are tamper-proof, protecting evidence from being tampered with are destroyed. Keyless evidence lockers are available with various compartment sizes based on the department’s needs. Read more about evidence lockers and refrigerated evidence lockers.

Maintaining the Chain of Custody

Our legal system relies on establishing and maintaining a secure “chain of custody.” Documenting the custody chain shows evidence handling throughout the collection, processing, analysis, and storage process. Presenting this documentation is vital during the legal process because questions about the integrity of a piece of evidence can disrupt justice. The keyless digital evidence lockers help to document and maintain the chain of custody.

“Southwest Solutions is highly professional and knowledgeable in the area of digital scanning. My organization has been working with SSG on scanning your highly sensitive and complex records. Their expertise has been extraordinarily beneficial to us as nobody in our organization has any knowledge of this process. They were able to easily guide us through the process, ask us the right questions and explain the pros and cons to help us decide how to complete this project. I would STRONGLY recommend SSG for anyone who is considering digitizing records.”
