SPD Surgical Instrument Storage Solutions
Sterile storage of wrapped surgical kits is a challenge for many hospitals. Many of them are taking unnecessary risks in storage that leads to additional handling and pinhole tears in the packaging, which can lead to patient infection or lost time and money spent waiting for sterile replacements. We offer sterile storage solutions for surgical instrument kits that reduce manual handling, increase patient safety, and improve the productivity and morale of surgical staff. Read on to learn about our complete solutions for a sterile logistics flow.
Dry Base Instrument Baskets
Stainless steel dry instrument baskets are available in standard configurations or fitted with high-frequency ID tags for sterilizing instruments before they are wrapped. The fine punch pattern guarantees permeability of more than 50%, allowing the optimum amount of steam and water to penetrate the baskets during sterilization. The dry base ensures that all condensation is able to evaporate when dried under radiation, convection, or conduction.
Perforation-Safe Wire Baskets or Shelves
Once the instruments in the dry base baskets have been wrapped, they are placed on an anti-slip silicone mat in a perforation-safe stainless steel wire basket or wire shelf. Once this step has been completed, the packed instruments no longer need to come into direct contact with hands or shelves. This allows staff to safely transfer the surgical instrument kits to autoclaves without risking contamination, forcing them to repeat the sterilization process again.
The shelves or baskets with silicone mats are transferred to open or closed transport carts specifically designed for the wire baskets and shelves. Stainless steel closed transport carts ensure that, even if sterilization takes place externally, the surgical kits will stay sterilized and protected during transport to the hospital.
Modular Temporary Storage
Often when sterile surgical kits are stored, they need to be stacked on top of each other, increasing the risks of perforation and contamination. Flexible modular racks are designed for temporary storage of surgical kits so they stay sterile. The user simply slides the basket or shelf containing the instrument kit into one of the storage columns, keeping each kit separate from the others. The racks can also be reconfigured or added to at any time to meet your hospital's changing needs.
From central sterilization department to the storage room and finally to the OR, you can be sure that your instruments stay sterile and ready. These components can also be implemented over time, allowing more control of your investments and budget. Even just one of these solutions will offer your hospital immediate advantages. With this full logistics solution, you can save time and money from avoiding re-processing perforated or damaged kits, improving productivity and morale or the surgical team, and, most importantly, ensuring patient safety.
