Preventing Tears in Sterile Blue Wrap Kits
Before reaching the OR, packed surgical blue wrap kits are manually handled four to five times prior to being opened. Manual handling, stacking, and inefficient storage can lead to perforations in blue kits, causing them to be sent back and re-sterilized. Instead of altering your logistics flow, sterile surgical instrument carts are an easy way to prevent tears in blue wrap kits along with the additional benefits of preventing HAIs, improving patient safety, and saving time, space, and money.
Sterile Surgical Instrument Carts Reduce Handling
It can cost up to $400 for every minute that surgery needs to be stopped. When a torn blue kit reaches the OR and has to be returned for re-sterilization, you're wasting time and money. Not only that, but using tools that haven't been properly sterilized can lead to HAIs that cost more money and lead to patient dissatisfaction, illness, or death. The best and most cost-effective way to drastically reduce time and money spent on re-sterilizing instruments is to utilize a storage system that allows you to reduce or eliminate perforations, tears, and wet packs entirely.
Sterile surgical instrument carts are designed to meet this need. They reduce manual handling, eliminate stacking by providing every wrapped kit with its own storage space, and safely store and transport blue wrap kits throughout the entire logistics flow.
- After the sterile instrument kits are washed and wrapped in blue paper, they are placed on specially designed perforation-safe wire trays with silicone mats. Once the kits are placed in these trays or baskets, they no longer come into contact with shelves or hands until reaching the OR.
- For transport, these trays are placed in open or closed transport carts. The carts have designated slots for each tray, so they don't need to be stacked on top of each other.
- The kits can then be transferred to storage or to the OR. Modular storage racks allow the wire baskets to be slid into its own "parking space" until it's needed for surgery. Upon retrieval, the basket or tray is slid out and placed in the transport cart. There's no need for it to come into contact with hands or other equipment, and no chance for it to get caught on the shelves and tear.
