Addressing amenity & safety hazard issues

The building was built in 1912 and based on the Italian Renaissance style. It was the epitome of historic graduer, but was without the many contemporary conveniences needed to achieve continued present-day success. Issues surrounding an absence of integrated technology and communal space for study and collaboration in addition to the absence of essential areas that were instrumental to the facility’s ability to prosper as a community resource needed tending to at the onset of the planning process.

Safety hazards in connection with the old central stack area, which was built from a steel-framed, self-supporting structure also needed to be addressed. It consisted of metal shelving uprights, which were bolted together one on top of each other and featured as multiple-tiered floors. Opaque glass title floors, that suspended right off the steel shelving posts, were the only thing that kept them separate. Because of the nature of its construction, a small gap existed between the base of the metal shelf and where the glass floor began. The lack of anything other than that of the glass serving as a barrier between the tiers made this a sizable fire hazard. The fact that the system was also seismic compounded the situation even further. It would be unsteady if an earthquake were to ever happen.

Library calls upon experts to secure storage installation

With the above concerns having been addressed, the library reached out to storage experts for help in securing the installation of the storage they desired. This included wooden library book cubbies, which were meant to be restored in some capacity, in addition to illuminated reading material stacks with customized features. Varying other storage was also utilized throughout the confines of the restored space, which was home to a multi-million volume collection. It had all been relocated elsewhere at the time of construction. In addition, the entire self-supporting structure was taken out and new floors were built. Some of the original glass floor tiles were also used to construct a wall on the bottom floor.
