Mobile book material storage & light illuminated library shelves
With their heart set on creating a one-of-a-kind experience for visitors, an architectural design team and library administrators looked to the expertise of storage experts for help in providing mobile book material storage and light illuminated library shelving. The shelves were installed within the interior of a 362,987 square-foot central library space, which was meant to be continuously visual throughout all 11 stories. Each were some of the shelving designed to accommodate storage for 1.4 million books. The facility also boasted a public spiral book stack, which extended up six whole floors. It was also essential that as much natural light as possible be allowed within the space to provide visibility and an ambient atmosphere.
Library design allows maximum use of natural light
Much of the library’s design was tended to with the greatest of care to ensure maximum use of whatever natural light was available. This included everything from the exterior windows which wrap around the building to the atrium found on the top floor and polycarbonate ceiling that assist with the distribution of light. Light illuminated library shelves facilitate increased visibility
To ensure there was no visual barrier on the shelves, the top and end panels for the light illuminated library shelves were fitted with a translucent acrylic material. Varying acrylic materials were tested for durability, scratch resistance and strength. Pins made of stainless steel were even procured by the storage company for the purpose of offsetting the panels from the shelf frames. Specialized lighting brackets were also figured into the design for light illuminated library shelves, which facilitate increased visibility of reading materials from overhead.
Mobile book material storage intended to maximize capacity
To ensure optimal code compliance and safety were accommodated, every shelving unit was seismically reinforced with gussets and added welded spreaders. In addition to providing ease-of-use and safety, a handful of mobile book material storage units were installed to maximize capacity within non-public areas where material was not as often accessed.
