Looking to transform and modernize a 45-year-old library by way of a distinct vision, the architects and designers hired for one project took to restoring the space by focusing on its interior design. It was to include many exquisite facets. All, of which, were meant to enhance the appearance of the building by leaving it with a much needed updated look. Among them were:

- A unique application of shelving within a space established by an alcove, which was located in the basement wall for housing old books
Clear on what they wanted to accomplish, those involved in the project set out to bring their vision to life by designing high alcove wall library collection storage and illuminated book display shelving. Many things had to be engineered to make certain that requirements unique to the situation were met. There were housings to fit and cover the lighting fixtures to static cantilever shelving. A few were even cut every couple of inches along the top for the purpose of allowing light to reflect upward against the ceiling, creating an indirect lighting effect. Light wiring was run along the core of the shelves for the sake of keeping it hidden from view. Illuminated book display shelving was equipped with sorter unit, face-out end panels that were angled for the purpose of highlighting special material. Its end panels were fashioned in such a way that it allowed the library a bit of flexibility when it came to its book aisles. Magnetic labels were added on the sides to make identification easy.

High alcove wall library collection storage, which handled housing for old books no longer considered to be part of the main collection, was constructed completely of cantilever shelving. This included everything from the frames on each wall right on down to that which protruded on each end to support and hold the books stored there. Adding and adjusting the books as needed was made simple with help from easy-to-lift “covers,” which were intermittently positioned along the height of the unit.
