Pass-Back Evidence Lockers
With their move to a new police headquarters, a police department wanted to make sure they did their storage right to not only save space and ensure efficiency, but to keep their people happy and make their jobs easier. One of these solutions was pass-back lockers for storing short-term evidence and securing the chain of custody for 24-hour processing. Click here to watch how the pass-back evidence lockers work.
Securing the Chain of Custody for Evidence
The police department employs 23 evidence technicians, with evidence being processed 24/7. Before the move, the property and evidence room consisted of a converted janitor's closet, which was so tight that technicians were using the floor to package large pieces of evidence. To make space even tighter, the packaged evidence was stored on static shelving and in standard lockers while refrigerated evidence was kept in a refrigerator secured by a padlock. This made it difficult to ensure the integrity of the evidence and made the technicians' job much more hassling.

In addition to longer periods required for holding evidence and the need to protect evidence throughout the chain of custody, the department wanted a more organized and secure evidence storage solution. Securing the chain of custody is of utmost importance for the prosecution of criminal cases, so the department was willing to go as high-tech as possible.
The department installed pass-back lockers, which are designed specifically for holding evidence of various sizes and maintaining the chain of custody during short-term storage periods. The lockers are built into the wall that separates the evidence drop-off area from the property and evidence room. An officer simply deposits packaged and labeled evidence in one of the open lockers, then pushes the button to lock the door. The compartment is now inaccessible from that side, ensuring the chain of custody until it definitively passes to the evidence technicians on the opposite side of the wall. Additionally, four double-walled refrigerated components are also included so officers don't need to store evidence in separate refrigerators.
