An Innovative Solution for Scope Drying & Storage
Association of Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) released new recommended standards for processing endoscopes with the aim to reduce the risk of cross-contamination between patients who undergo endoscopic procedures. Metal endoscope cabinets with HEPA filters are designed to properly dry and store all types of scopes including colonoscopies, EUS Scopes, TEE probes, bronchoscopes, cystoscopies, and ENT Scopes. Metal Endoscope Cabinet Hangs Scopes Vertically
The first drying and storage recommendation is to keep the scopes vertical. This prevents coiling and kinking, allowing the moisture to drain from scopes. Reducing moisture decreases the potential for microbial growth.
The metal endoscope cabinet meets this requirement. Scopes are securely stored hanging. And a back wall with padded vinyl prevents damage to the scopes. The cabinet is also big enough to allow for enough space in between each scope so that they do not touch.
Why the HEPA Filter is Important for Scope Drying & Storage
The AAMI standards also advise keeping scopes in a cabinet. This protects them from possible physical damage. However, they recommend that the cabinet allows for air circulation to once again prevent moisture from accumulating.
One of the major advantages of the metal endoscope cabinets is the HEPA filter. When the door is closed, the fan is triggered to the on position by an infrared switch in the fan unit. The HEPA filter is mounted over the air intake slots at the bottom of the cabinet. So when the door is closed the air that the cabinet is pulling in and across the scopes is cleaner.
Endoscope Cabinets are Metal to Prevent Moisture Build-Up
Finally the guidelines specify using an easy to clean, yet heavy-duty material. The endoscope cabinet is entirely constructed of metal. This facilitates easy cleaning and sterilization. The metal also doesn’t retain moisture like wood. If you are hanging scopes to protect them, but more importantly dry them, the optimal cabinet is metal because it won’t act as a deterrent to a dry environment.
