surgical supplies stored in compact shelving systems for easy access

Compact Shelving Maximizes Surgical Supply Storage

The Surgical Services Department at a large medical center recently upgraded their storage in the operating room core. To maximize space and provide easier access to stored items, they replaced more than 70 wire carts with 7 smaller compact shelving systems. The compact shelving systems utilize space more efficiently in the OR, and improved organization so that staff are more productive and faster at managing supplies. Click here to learn more about high density mobile shelving. Available on Vizient GPO Contract #CE2900 (Vizient customers call for contract pricing.

How the Department Organized Supplies: Before & After

Previously the department was using wire racks to store surgical supplies and equipment. But the racks had a tendency to tear holes in supplies and made critical supplies hard to find. The racks were also inefficient on space utilization. There was wasted space between and in front of racks, as well as unused space between shelves.

In total 7 compact shelving systems were incorporated into the OR for storing sterile supplies, cases and instruments. In the main core, 2 systems store supply items; between the orthopedics surgery rooms 2 systems are used for replacement parts and supplies; 2 systems store supplies for the neurosurgery suite; and finally 1 system is located in the heart core area.

Features and Benefits of the Compact Shelving Systems

Shelf openings were designed to maximize space, while still accommodating large items such as surgery cases, which are brought up each day for scheduled surgeries.

The compact shelving systems were designed with clear end panels so that items are easily visible and quickly located. Also, on the end of the large central core supply unit, open slanted shelving was incorporated to store fast moving sutures.

Finding items quickly is critical because 3 to 4 minutes is an eternity in an operating room. If staff can’t locate an item, it can have a major impact on a surgery. With the compact shelving systems, supplies are organized so staff can easily go in and get what they need. Equipment and supplies are readily available and there is no waiting for an item during surgery.
