Art Museum Uses Spacesaver Compact Mobile Storage
An art museum was relocating to a new facility that allowed for more exhibit space, but not enough storage space. After reaching out to Spacesaver®, the museum was able to install compact mobile storage that not only maximized their use of space, it offered extra protection for priceless artifacts.
Problems the Museum Faced with Artifact Storage in the New Building
The world-renowned art museum relocated to a newly renovated historical building. This new space offers the museum a massive amount of space – from 90,000 sq. ft. to 165,000 sq. ft. However, most of this space is dedicated to open spaces, exhibit areas, and educational areas. The storage space for the museum’s collections was limited to the basement; a space that is also shared with conservation labs, exhibit workshops, and other functional areas. And because of the historic nature of the building, expanding or changing the exterior look of the building was not an option.
Spacesaver Created a Customized Solution that Included Compact Mobile Storage
After researching their options, the museum realized they needed a customized solution that would maximize their limited space while preserving their collection. The museum reached out to Spacesaver because they knew Spacesaver had all the storage solutions they would need for their unique artifacts – including compact mobile storage.
The compact mobile storage system for the museum was created using over 200 environmentally controlled cabinets. The cabinets offer protection through completely controlled storage environments that help to maintain a constant level of humidity and temperature. The silicone seals also provide an airtight storage environment that minimizes artifact exposure to dust, insects, and particulates.
And because the cabinets are part of the compact mobile storage system, they take up less space. How this works is by eliminating the access aisle that would typically be required between each row of cabinets and replacing it with one or two movable access aisles. In fact, the compact mobile storage reduced the museum’s storage footprint enough to allow room for future growth.
Additional storage solutions provided by Spacesaver to the museum included:
- Compact art racks for framed art pieces.
- Bulk storage racks for rolled textiles.
- Stationary pallet racks for stone sculptures, furniture and metals.
- Specialized cabinets for screen paintings.
- Drawers for small ivories, works on paper, and scroll paintings.
