Art Museum Building Succeeds with Compact Mobile Storage Systems
When a prominent art museum set out to design a new building addition, the main goal was to create a new artistic identity. The design was a success, attracting over half a million visitors since its opening. Part of what made the addition so successful were the compact high density storage systems installed throughout the facility.
Why the Art Museum Needed a Better Solution for Storage
The expanded museum features expansive galleries for traveling exhibits, an invitingly attractive museum store and restaurant and other open spaces designed to create an impressive ambiance. As the new addition was constructed, the museum also expanded and renovated its existing permanent galleries and reorganized its permanent collection.
When the expansion project began, major gifts of collections in 19th and 20th century prints, photography, folk art, and paintings ranging from Renoir to O’Keeffe placed a greater demand on existing storage spaces. To meet these demands, the museum relied on compact high density storage systems.
In a new print study room, compact high density storage along with flat file cabinets and shelving were installed to house lithographs, silk screen prints and etchings. Another compact high density system was carefully placed under a staircase to house large decorative objects, while another system was added to store small objects.
Using compact high density storage systems significantly enhanced the museum’s ability to add to its collections. In fact, the compact storage systems enabled the museum to consolidate a number of smaller storage spaces, improve collection organization, and better protect stored items.
