Saving time and money with automated storage systems in automotive departments
In automotive service departments, it's crucial to have competent staff, knowledgeable technicians, and the right parts management system to ensure all operations run as smoothly and efficiently as possible. Knowing where the right part is at the right time not only saves time, but improves a customer's service experience. Instead of using bulky, space-eating static storage shelving, automated storage systems have been proven to greatly maximize performance of automotive service departments because they consolidate space while keeping all parts organized and accessible.
types of automated storage systems for automotive service departments
There are a variety of types of automated storage systems that you can implement in your parts department depending on which system works best for your needs. Each system can also be customized.
Vertical Lift Modules (VLM): Also known as vertical shuttles, VLMs store and retrieve a wide variety of inventory on large storage trays and delivers them at an ergonomically placed workstation. The shuttles can store small, medium and large parts such as tail pipes and mufflers as well as small parts. The shuttles have modular construction for maximum flexibility, durable tooth belt drives, multiple capacity trays, an internal weight management system, flexible tray delivery, and more.
Vertical Carousels: These vertical storage systems provide high density storage solutions while also giving quick access to parts. Parts are stored on a system of vertically arranged rotating shelves that bring the part directly to the operator. Vertical carousels are best suited for small and medium sized automotive parts that are consistent in size. The carousels are modular and flexible in design with interchangeable carriers so the system can grow along with your business.
Horizontal Carousels: Horizontal carousels are best suited for high speed parts picking. A group, or pod, of horizontal carousels work together to provide maximum efficiency and throughput. Wire shelves are mounted on tracks that rotate the carousels horizontally to deliver stored items directly to an operator. The operator is able to pick a part from one active carousel while the others are getting in position to be picked from as soon as the operator is ready.
Batch Picking Software: Batch picking helps facilitate inventory management and order fulfillment even further by reducing time associated with parts picking and improves order picking accuracy. It also ensures that the right parts are always in stock and reduces paper. Batch picking software easily integrates with the systems listed above.
