The Library was Running out of Space for JFK Archives

Today’s libraries are more than just places to keep books; they also store and display our history. A few months ago, the W.R. Poage Legislative Library at Baylor University was awarded the opportunity to archive and display additional records pertaining to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The only catch was the library was almost out of floor space and had no idea how they were going to be able to make room for such a large collection.

Compact Shelving is the Solution to the Library’s Space Problem

Because we have a long-standing relationship with Baylor, they called us in to survey and analyze the collection. Our solution to their space problem was Compact Shelving. The way Compact Shelving works is that access aisles are removed so that the shelves can “compact” together. When someone needs access to stored items within the system, all they have to do is rotate the handle to move the shelves and create an aisle.

This mechanism for moving the shelves and opening the aisle is referred to as “mechanical assist”. That means that there is a mechanical system that works when someone turns the handle to help move the shelves. What that means for the user is that it takes almost no effort on their part to move several rows of shelving.

Storing the Collection in Less Space and Keeping up Appearances

Our sales representative, Brandon Baird, worked with the staff at the Poage Library to design their Compact Shelving. Even though there was limited floor space available, he was able to make the shelving fit in a very tight area. In fact, the new Compact Shelving only uses half the floor space of the old book stacks that were previously in the space. In addition to meeting the library’s space concerns, he was able to maintain the level of aesthetics that the library wanted with an elegant wood appearance to the shelving.

Thanks to the Poage Library for Letting Us Help Them!

After the project was completed, the library manager expressed that he was “excited the project was completed” and that he and his staff are completely satisfied with the Compact Shelving. He also stated that “Brandon worked closely with us each step of the way and did an excellent job understanding and meeting all of our needs.”

We are thrilled to have been able to help the Poage Library with such an important collection and value all of our clients and their feedback. If you are interested in learning more about this project or Compact Shelving, give us a call at 1-800-803-1083 or send us a message.
