Properly Preserving Biological Evidence Long-Term

storing biological evidence in temperature controlled rooms in mobilized racking systemsDue to advances in DNA testing, the proper preservation of biological evidence is more important than ever before. And in many cases, evidence – DNA extracts, bodily fluids, liquid blood – needs to be kept in frozen or refrigerated rooms for an indefinite amount of time. For these situations, finding a storage solution that maximizes storage capacity is paramount to reducing the energy and operational costs associated with temperature controlled spaces.

Storage Options for Temperature Controlled Rooms

Typically, walk-in refrigerators and freezers and lined with wire racking or shelving. The problem with these static storage options is that they limit the amount of space that’s actually used for storage. Access aisles in between rows waste the space that could be used to increase biological evidence storage capacity.

On the other hand, mobilized racking systems offer the opportunity to maximize the use of space in temperature controlled environments by removing unnecessary access aisles. Racks are compacted together and move along tracks to create one or two access aisles, depending on your specific needs.

How Using Mobilized Racking Systems Saves Space

For example, in a 10’x30’ temperature controlled room you can line it with five rows of static racks. If you outfitted the same room with a mobilized racking system, you would have eight racks and only one access aisle. See the image below for the comparison.

As the example demonstrates, you can see there is no longer any wasted aisle space and the storage capacity of the room as increased. Additionally, if you are still in the planning stages, you can effectively decrease the size of the walk-in refrigerator or freezer you’ll need for storing biological evidence, which will reduce energy costs.

However, if you maximize space with solutions like mobilized racking systems you will maintain the integrity of your evidence while best utilizing your resources.
