How the Acrylic End Panels & Canopy Tops Were Made
The library had two main goals: 1) highlight its massive collection of 1.4 million books and 2) maximize the natural light in the building. With these goals in mind, the design team responsible for the library renovation decided they needed a way to make the cantilever shelving translucent.
This idea was made possible through testing different acrylic materials for resistance, strength, and durability; sourcing stainless steel pins to offset the acrylic panels from the shelving frames; and engineering light brackets for overhead lighting of the shelves. The resulting product, cantilever shelving with acrylic end panels and canopy tops, was exactly what the library and design team wanted.

The new shelving complemented the library’s design concept because there are no visible barriers of maximizing natural light by not causing the visual barrier that opaque end panels and canopy tops would. The customized shelving also allowed the books to be the main focal point.
