Program Description: (Counts toward one AIA LU) Part 2 identifies major storage concerns within three segments in the Public Safety market: Crime Labs, Courthouses, and Corrections. Smart Storage for Today's Justice Market will identify major storage concerns within specific areas of the Justice Market, including Law Enforcement, Crime Labs, Courthouses and Correctional Facilities. Storage Systems - Floor Loading Implications
Program Description: (Counts toward one AIA LU) The facilities mandate is clear. "Do more with less space!" High-density mobile storage systems provide twice the storage capacity in the same floor space or free up space for other activities, but increased storage density results in increased floor loads in the building. With a basic understanding of floor loading concepts the non-engineer can become conversant with the structural professional and, thus, potentially speed up the building design and decision making process by avoiding unnecessary delays.
In addition to the basics of floor loading and building code requirements, this report touches on the main components and basic characteristics of floor systems in three general categories: 1.) Reinforced concrete frames that are case-in-place, 2.) Structural steel frames and 3.) Hybrid or specialized frames. Structural systems must be evaluated for both uniform load ratings and concentrated load ratings. Most high-density storage systems create a concentrated load on a floor. There are several strategies to accommodate the heavier loads in buildings created by high-density storage systems. These include the ability to reorient, redistribute, relocate, reconfigure and reinforce. This report illustrates several strategies to accommodate heavier loads with the use of real life case studies.

Program Description: (Counts toward one AIA HSW LU) In this presentation we will follow medical supplies throughout the Acute Care environment in order to see how storage location configuration, if correctly designed, can influence staff functions, staff efficiency, and staff productivity. In addition, careful planning can produce marked improvements in inventory control--a prime importance in healthcare facilities today. Learn how to reduce the space required for storage for new construction and renovation of existing facilities and the importance of early planning. There are approximately 6,200 acute care hospitals in the United States. There are several different types of hospitals including: general, teaching, veteran, military and specialty facilities. It is important that the storage be specified to fit the items to be stored, knowing that there is the ability to change components, if needs or functions change. Investigate storage in the clinical (surgery, central services, laundry, in-patient pharmacy, outpatient pharmacy, laboratory, etc.) and non-clinical, less technical departments (medical records, X-Ray, personnel, etc.).

Alternative Storage Methods Relative to Today's Accessibility Standard and Requirements
Program Description: AIA - CES Course #ACC50 (certified for AIA continuing education credit) Participants in this program will benefit from a comparison of different storage and retrieval systems. These systems include vertical and lateral cabinets, rotary files, static shelving, tri-file, mobile aisle and automated vertical carousels. Each of these systems will be reviewed based on labor needs, compliance with currently legislated accessibility requirements and space savings. Using the acronym PEP, each system will be analyzed for (P) productivity-labor savings, (E) ergonomics and (P) performance-space savings. Recent modifications to the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines are incorporated into the program as it pertains to the various storage and retrieval systems discussed. These modifications are specific to the use of the various storage systems. This is a 40 minute presentation with an additional 20 minutes for discussion.
