Program Description: (Counts toward one AIA/CES LU) Libraries are no longer JUST places for research, browsing, studying, and quiet contemplation. The library’s functionality is changing from “book storage space” to “technology-rich people space.”  Learn how new information formats, student expectations, steady acquisition rates, weeding, digitizing, economic conditions and sustainable design challenges can all be addressed with appropriate storage solutions and space planning.

Storage location and configuration, if correctly designed, can influence patron and staff functions, efficiency, and productivity. In addition, storage solutions can greatly impact the cost of space. Learn how to reduce the space required for storage for new construction and renovation of existing facilities and the importance of early planning. It is important that the storage is custom designed to fit the items to be stored, knowing that there is the ability to change components, if needs or functions change. Discussion will also include disability access, floor loads, materials preservation, security and fire protection.

Learning Objectives:
1.    Gain awareness of trends and challenges impacting library design and planning
2.    Identify storage solutions that can combat current challenges
3.    Understand how storage solutions can contribute to LEED certification efforts

Program Format/Length: Sixty-minute PowerPoint Slide presentation including Question & Answer period.

Storage Considerations - Optimizing Storage From Collar to Conviction: Part 1Spasaver correctional facilites storage shelving

Program Description: (Counts toward one AIA LU) Part 1 identifies major storage concerns within Law Enforcement Facilities.  The latest statistics for inmate populations reveal staggering increases in the number of people incarcerated in the United States. Correctional facilities actually serve as a small community, in which inmates sleep, eat, bathe, learn, and work. Learn the trends and how they impact facility planning. Storage location and configuration, if correctly designed, can influence staff functions, safety, efficiency, and productivity. Learn how to reduce the space required for storage for new construction and renovation of existing facilities and the importance of early planning. It is important that the storage be specified to fit the items to be stored, knowing that there is the ability to change components, if needs or functions change.  Investigate storage in the various departments throughout the correctional facility, while also addressing other considerations including: Security and safety, fire protection, disability access, floor loads, flexibility and design.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explain the reasons for space shortage in correctional facilities.
  2. Identify storage options for correctional facilities including special storage considerations and procedures.
  3. Illustrate storage solutions that reduce construction costs.

Program Format/Length: Sixty minute PowerPoint slide presentation including question and answer period.

Storage Considerations - Optimizing Storage From Collar to Conviction: Part 2

Program Description: (Counts toward one AIA LU) Part 2 identifies major storage concerns within three segments in the Public Safety market: Crime Labs, Courthouses, and Corrections.  Smart Storage for Today's Justice Market will identify major storage concerns within specific areas of the Justice Market, including Law Enforcement, Crime Labs, Courthouses and Correctional Facilities. While identifying major storage concerns, this presentation will also identify storage solutions for those concerns that maximize efficiency, save floor space and reduce construction costs. Finally, the presentation will touch upon other major planning considerations, such as floor loading, fire codes and safety requirements.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify major storage concerns within specific areas of the Justice market, including Law Enforcement, Crime Labs, Courthouses and Correctional Facilities.
  2. Identify storage options that maximize efficiency, save floor space and can reduce construction costs.
  3. Identify what architects need to consider when planning storage spaces in order to meet floor loading, fire code and safety requirements.

Program Format/Length: Sixty-minute PowerPoint slide presentation including question and answer period.

Storage Systems - Floor Loading ImplicationsSpacesaver high density floor loading logo

Program Description: (Counts toward one AIA LU) The facilities mandate is clear. "Do more with less space!" High-density mobile storage systems provide twice the storage capacity in the same floor space or free up space for other activities, but increased storage density results in increased floor loads in the building. With a basic understanding of floor loading concepts the non-engineer can become conversant with the structural professional and, thus, potentially speed up the building design and decision making process by avoiding unnecessary delays.

In addition to the basics of floor loading and building code requirements, this report touches on the main components and basic characteristics of floor systems in three general categories: 1.) Reinforced concrete frames that are case-in-place, 2.) Structural steel frames and 3.) Hybrid or specialized frames. Structural systems must be evaluated for both uniform load ratings and concentrated load ratings. Most high-density storage systems create a concentrated load on a floor. There are several strategies to accommodate the heavier loads in buildings created by high-density storage systems. These include the ability to reorient, redistribute, relocate, reconfigure and reinforce. This report illustrates several strategies to accommodate heavier loads with the use of real life case studies.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Why floor loading must be considered.
  2. The floor load characteristics of high-density storage systems.
  3. Introduce common floor construction types and their properties.

Program Format/Length: Sixty-minute PowerPoint slide presentation including questions and answer period.

Program Description: (Counts toward one AIA HSW LU) In this presentation we will follow medical supplies throughout the Acute Care environment in order to see how storage location configuration, if correctly designed, can influence staff functions, staff efficiency, and staff productivity. In addition, careful planning can produce marked improvements in inventory control--a prime importance in healthcare facilities today. Learn how to reduce the space required for storage for new construction and renovation of existing facilities and the importance of early planning. There are approximately 6,200 acute care hospitals in the United States. There are several different types of hospitals including: general, teaching, veteran, military and specialty facilities. It is important that the storage be specified to fit the items to be stored, knowing that there is the ability to change components, if needs or functions change. Investigate storage in the clinical (surgery, central services, laundry, in-patient pharmacy, outpatient pharmacy, laboratory, etc.) and non-clinical, less technical departments (medical records, X-Ray, personnel, etc.).

Learning Objectives:

  1. Review the departments within a healthcare facility including the clinical and non-clinical areas and their function within a healthcare facility.
  2. Define the different types of hospitals including general hospitals, teaching hospitals, veteran hospitals, military hospitals and specialty hospitals.
  3. Identify specific and potential cost savings with the use of storage in regard to the function and storage needs of the department.

Testimony

"As a BIM Manager, I have been making BIM library families from scratch and creating/adapting vendor families for years for a variety of commercial projects. Today I was literally breathless when first seeing the quality of families from Spacesaver. They have real parametric controls, are conscientious of the digital weight and aesthetically wowing. Not only are these families better than any vendor I have seen… I couldn’t have done it better myself! Fantastic work!"
